Details: The native range of the species is from Italy eastward as far as Iran. But it most likely originated east of the Balkans and appears to have arrived in Greece around 1000 BC, where it was able to adapt.
Generations of villagers of Arna grew up in the shade of this historic plane tree, including Panagiotis Giatrakos (1781-1851) who, thanks to his leadership qualities, played an important role on a military and political level both during the Revolution and in the early years of the independent Greek state.
