Sidirokastro had been a base of operations for klephts even in the pre-revolutionary period. According to local tradition, at a time when the klephts were being hunted down by Ottoman forces (1805-1806), Theodoros Kolokotronis took refuge at Sidirokastro, where he is said to have rested with his companions in the shade of this sycamore maple.
