Species: Cupressus sempervirens
Age: Centuries-old
Details: The native range of the Mediterranean cypress is most probably from Crete and eastward. However, it appears that many cypress trees had been planted throughout Greece from as early as ancient times.
It is said that the seven cypress trees at Zacholi were planted in the place where a young man was murdered by the local Aga in a fit of jealousy because his wife had stood up when the man was dancing at a celebration and shouted: “Bravo, my gallant rayah!” According to another version, it was here that seven unidentified Greek revolutionaries were buried after a victorious clash against remnants of the Ottoman army of Mahmud Dramali Pasha.
